About this piece
A pear is the most directional of the brilliant cuts — it throws light from the point and holds it in the shoulders. Set rigidly, it spends most of its life facing the wrong way.
The bail here is hinged on a single axis, so the stone tracks the wearer's movement and continually re-presents itself to the light. It is a small mechanism and an irritating one to make well, since any slack in the hinge shows as a wobble.
The chain is drawn rather than bought in, so its gauge matches the bail exactly.
